Portugal, Figueira Da Foz

"The pega involves eight forcados who challenge the bull with their bare hands. They form a line facing the bull and the caras (front man) eggs the bull on by "playing" with it and taking steps forward if necessary to get it to charge. Once the bull runs forward the first forcado times his jump onto the bull's head. Once on the bull's head and holding onto it, usually around its neck, six forcados jump upon the bull in the same fashion as the first forcado, piling upon themselves and grabbing the bull while one forcado grabs the bull by its tail. The objective is to subdue the bull." Wikipedia

Lol. Great piece. Love how you set this up as a photo that tells an event almost like a cause and effect chain, or before and after :D

Don't trust Wikipedia - it's a load of bull! :shithappens: lol, sorry - had to do that =p

I remember on Worlds most amazing videos I saw a rodeo contestant have a huge flap of skin dangling from the side of his head due to an attack by a bull in a similar event...crazy :wtf:

It's disgusting that this kind of barbaric activity still goes on in our supposedly "civilised" age.

Oh come on. This has to be one of the hardest challenges people of that culture could partake. I wouldn't say this is barbaric, because I would also have to say the the idea of American football is barbaric.

Anyway, I really like this Pretender!

People have a choice whether or not to participate in American football. The bull has no choice about participating in a bullfight.

If these people want a challenge, why don't they run a marathon or try fighting each other instead?

The bull is not even being killed. Other sports include SHOOTING the animal in the face. I consider those to be much worse, seeing as afterward here the bull is perfectly fine.

Have a read of the wikipedia article on Portuguese bull-fighting [link] , and then decide whether you think it is barbaric or not. Note that those things sticking out of the bull's back are javelins, and that most bulls are killed (outside the ring) after the fight. Just because there are other more violent "sports", it doesn't mean that this is not barbarous and cruel.

I find a good rule of thumb is to ask whether I would want myself or a loved one to be in that position. Would I want to be the bull in a bullfight? No. Would I want to play American football? Sure, why not? Someone would have to explain the rules first, though...

Apologies to Pr3t3nd3r for all these comments on his photos!

I retract most of my previous statements, seeing as the bull IS killed much of the time. I apologize for asserting things without proper foreknowledge.

And yea, sorry Pr3, your picture is still really cool!
